QUICK TIPS

Driveway and Sidewalk Clean-up

It is important to keep your driveway and sidewalk cleaned, free of debris at your home or office. The appearance of your home or office is vital to beautifying the area or attracting new customers. Prior to taking on the task, assess the situation and break down the process in small steps.

What are the major obstacles to handle? surface cracks, grass, dirt, oil or grease?

  • Prior to cleaning the surface, remove the debris by mowing or edging the areas near the concrete. You can use an edger (weedeater). If you do not possess a mechanical tool, you can use a “spade” to clear the surface.
  • After edging and removal of debris, use a blower or broom to clean the surface.
  • Identify the stained areas to be cleaned. You can purchase various concrete cleaning agents from your local home improvement center or you make your own cleaning solutions. (I will go more into detail below)
  • Apply the cleaning agent to the surface area that will be cleaned. If you have a brisk brush, move this back and forth to allow the cleaning agent to penetrate the surface or stained area.
  • Use a pressure washer if possible. If you do not have one available, you can rent one at a local “rental or home improvement” store.

Below are a couple of tidbits to save you time and money!

Creating your own cleaning solution:

  • Mix 1 part bleach to 3 parts water (use proper safety attire). This mixture will lighten the cleaning area on dirt areas and will assist with some oil stains. Keep in mind that concrete is pourus and the oils will penetrate the surface. It will be hard to remove the stains, but this will clean the stain on top of the surface.
  • Do you have grass growing in cracks? After removing the grass or edging and cleaning with a pressure washer, create a mixture of salt and baking soda. pour and brush into the affected areas. This will penetrate the crack and should kill the weeds down to the root.
